Felipe Pereira de Melo, a lawyer, former police officer, and law professor at UNIASSELVI, analyzed seven TV productions. His goal? To separate fact from fiction.

“I’m a big fan of these series, especially because art reflects life in a fascinating way,” Felipe explains.

In addition to being a lawyer, he is a specialist in Criminal Law, Criminal Sciences, and Police Intelligence. He also served as a military police officer in the State of Paraná from 2010 to 2014 and as a civil police officer from 2014 to 2023.

1. Mindhunter – Netflix

Let’s start with Mindhunter. The series accurately portrays the FBI’s pioneering work in criminal profiling during the 1970s.

The characters are inspired by real agents. Moreover, the interviews with criminals reflect techniques still used today.

However, the show romanticizes profiling as an infallible solution. In reality, it’s just one of many investigative tools available.

2. CSI (Las Vegas, Miami, NY) – AXN, Amazon Prime Video, Paramount+

CSI popularized forensic investigation among the general public. Many techniques shown are, in fact, used by forensic experts.

However, unlike the series, real-life experts rarely participate in interrogations. Nor do they carry weapons or lead police investigations.

Evidence is analyzed by multidisciplinary teams. Consequently, forensic work is just one part of the investigative process.

3. Law & Order (SVU, Criminal Intent) – Universal TV, Netflix, Globoplay, Amazon Prime Video, Mercado Play

Law & Order stands out for balancing investigation and judicial process. It is certainly one of the most realistic series in the genre.

The interaction between police and prosecution is well represented. In addition, the challenges of gathering evidence are portrayed sensitively.

That said, complex investigations are resolved very quickly. In real life, difficult cases can take months or even years.

4. The Sopranos – HBO, Max

The Sopranos accurately depicts the structure of the American mafia. Money laundering and political corruption are portrayed precisely.

The protagonist’s psychological aspects are emphasized. On the other hand, the high number of internal murders would be unlikely in reality.

5. Dexter – Paramount+, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Mercado Play

Dexter presents significant inconsistencies. A forensic expert committing murders for years without being discovered is virtually impossible.

In practice, small DNA traces are hard to eliminate. Also, crime patterns would be detected by criminal analysts.

6. Homeland – Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV

Homeland provides a technical view of intelligence and counterterrorism. Clandestine operations are portrayed with considerable realism.

However, real agents operate under strict chains of command. They rarely have the autonomy shown by the protagonist Carrie Mathison.

7. Fauda – Netflix

Fauda is considered extremely authentic. The show was created by former members of Israeli special forces, ensuring technical accuracy.

Infiltration operations are shown with great realism. The Mista’arvim agents really do exist and operate as depicted in the series.

However, real-life infiltrations require months of preparation. Judicial and bureaucratic approvals are often needed before execution.

Finally, for those passionate about the subject, university courses provide deeper knowledge. UNIASSELVI offers programs in Criminology and Forensic Investigation.

In conclusion, crime series strike a balance between entertainment and reality. While creative liberties are taken, many elements reflect authentic procedures.
